I found these articles while visiting Car & Driver, figured there’d be a few people (cough, HHFP) interested in the time/money sink that’s involved in getting an FJ-40 series vehicle imported.

Good articles (particularly the second one). Unless you consult an expert I strongly recommend staying away from South American 40s. There are some honest ones but the majority are just putting lipstick on a pig.

Car & Driver blocks my country so I can’t read it. I’m too lazy to fiddle with proxies and stuff.
Man the facelifts look weird.

Totally agree, I’ve seen some bande i ra tes come through the shops up here that made the owners eyes water with repair bills.

Like bshappy said, its a VERY mixed bag importing one of these. For one they are a tiny bit different than most US market ones and it can be a pain when going to make repairs or order parts. Some are so different as to not even have Toyota engines (mercedes engines). to say nothing of questionable ownership history. That being said if its a choice between buying the best south american one you can find for a relative deal or a rusted out heap here for the same price and you plan on restoring either one...might as well start with the better body.

I live in the states. my family is from Colombia, a decade a go i got the “ Jeep bug” as i was dating my wife, something to drive there and then import it. i knew of the 25 year rule, at the time purchased an 83 fj43, around $10k, an old telephone company truck, well cared of with extra leafs i the rear. The realization of drum brakes all around, manual steering. no heat, tope d at 50mph was a harsh reality i got used to for the 2 weeks i enjoyed it. a weel later it was stolen from the gar age where was being kept. was short fun. but i miss my “ grasshopper”

That’s rough. An idiot texting while driving nearly totaled my Jeep three months after I bought it, so I can sympathize with that feeling of sudden deprivation after falling in love.
